When Doves Cry is a 12x12 x 1.75 inch original mixed media painting on canvas. This painting is inspired by the 1984 classic of the same title by Prince off of the iconic Purple Rain album. It features two doves above a sea of violet flowers. The doves are 'crying' glittery turquoise tears. In addition to handmade and vintage paper, a page from a fairy tale and other collage materials, the painting includes lyrics and sheet music from the song, and you can see them peeking through the paint and bits of collage paper. I listened to the album while painting and was in awe of the amazingly talented Prince all over again. (The sides are now painted a neutral gray to match the grays in the piece.)
Some of the lyrics:
Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can you my darling
Can you picture this?
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can you my darling
Can you picture this?
Dream, if you can, a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and you
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and you
How can you just leave me standing
Alone in a world that's so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (she's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry
Alone in a world that's so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (she's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry
