"First Snow" is an 8x10 archival print on 8.5x11 inch radiant white paper. The original encaustic painting has been sold, but the etched details and bright colors are very vivid in the print!
Every year I create one special holiday painting, and this one was inspired by childhood memories of sledding all day, then rushing home for hot chocolate. I did not have a white kitty dressed in candy-cane socks, but if I had, I surely would have gathered her up for a ride in the snow.
The original piece was created by fusing multiple layers of molten beeswax, and I then carved the layers - mountain peaks, little details in the jacket and the snowy footprints before filling them with oil paint. The final piece is sculptural and has dimension. The moon is made of gold leaf.
The colors are red, white, natural wood and a touch of celadon green.
